OUR APPROACH

Decolonizing practices are actions we can take, words we can say and ideas can we unlearn/learn to transform colonial impacts. We aim to address the challenge of where to start within the enormity of reconciliation. By dialoguing professional scenarios within a forgiving space of a giant game board, we get a chance for a do-over and we start to map out the what’s next.

The work is grounded in Squamish ways of knowing with a matriarchal approach as designed by Michelle Lorna Nahanee, Squamish. Michelle was recently awarded the 2019 City of Vancouver Award of Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion.

"My firm recently engaged Michelle to host a Decolonizing Practices workshop for our leadership team...

This topic makes many uncomfortable—and rightly so—but she approached the conversation with ease and grace, and demonstrated flexibility and professionalism as she adjusted her content to our group, context, and time restraints. I am grateful for the creativity and effort she invested in hosting us, and humbled by the lessons we learned. This is important work, but Michelle made it as fun as it was thought-provoking. I encourage anyone reading this to invite Michelle into your business ASAP and learn from this wise Squamish matriarch and scholar.” MARK BUSSE, Director, TILT Curiosity Labs, HCMA ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN
